Mr Langvatn’s Tactics – Test Results

Mr Langvatn’s Tactics – Test Results

Hey, guys. One of the most awaited articles is finally here. That’s right. The test results of the tactics created by the tactical genius Mr. Langvatn himself, in all its glory. We have followed all the pre-requisites laid out by him to do this test. What are they, you ask? Well, a few of them are given below.

  1. We have ensured that the morale of all players is Superb throughout the test.

  2. We have ensured that the fitness level of all the players is 100 percent throughout the test.

  3. We have ensured the player condition of all the players is 100 percent throughout the test.

  4. We have ensured there is no possibility of injury in the test.

  5. We have ensured that the tactical familiarity is fluid throughout the test.

  6. We have ensured that the Opposition Instructions are set correctly as per the tactic tested.

  7. We have even gone as far as ensuring that even hidden attributes do not account to the randomness of the test.

  8. We have tested two teams in all the tests.
    A mid-table side with Current ability of 145 (CA145)
    A low-table side with Current ability of 120 (CA120)

  9. We have used 46 teams for our test which includes a myriad of strength levels. We have the likes of Barcelona, Bayern and Real as well as the likes of Basel, Rosenborg and Anderlecht.

  10. Each side plays 90 matches per season(45 home and 45 away).

A huge thanks to Panos99 from FM-Base for creating the FM Fitness Coach application which made points 1 to 4 possible. This is huge as even the opposition will have all these features enabled and this has gone on a long way to make this test void of randomness and incredibly accurate.

So, let us go to the test results without waiting further.

1) 4-4-2 Deep Sicilian Defense(Adapted From FM 16)

image1

Undoubtedly, the Deep Sicilian defense was one of the best tactics of FM 16. There was little surprise when we found that it was still working on FM 17 beta and even after the release of the full game. The tactic employs two deep defensive midfielders who shield the defenders, which allows the four attackers and full backs to wreak havoc in the opposition area. Let us see how it performed in our test.

Results for Mid-table side

Media Prediction : 20

Our CA145 side played well to obtain a decent 13th place finish, seven places above the media prediction. They did well to leap-frog some good sides including Chelsea, Napoli, Roma, Valencia and the likes in the process. They have scored 98 goals which is the 12th best in the league and conceded only 44 goals, which is the 13th best in the league.

Results for Lower-table side

Media Prediction : 44

image1

The CA120 side managed to defy the odds to finish in the 29th position, a massive 15 positions above expectations in a rough league. There were not shy to score goals and ended up scoring 75 goals, which made them the 17th best team in terms of goals scored. But they did concede 65 goals which is only the 33rd best in the league. With that being said, it is a great achievement for a team predicted to be at the bottom rungs of the ladder to finish with a positive goal difference.

Strength

We recommend that you invest in good wide midfielders and full backs as most of the assists came through crosses in this tactic. The corner set-piece has also brought in a few valuable goals and it would be prudent to spend money on a good corner taker who can play on the wings.

Weakness

We are going to find this weakness of many tactics involving high defensive lines. Lack of fast defenders will cut your defense open when the opponents sends through balls and early crosses past the defense. Invest in pacy defenders to mitigate this problem.

2) 3-2-5 Traxler Counter Attack

image1

Another one of Mr L's different creations, the Traxler counter attack does what it has been created for, score goals. You will do well to find anyone else's tactic score as much goals as this one. The attack starts from the back where the Ball-playing defenders instigate a devastating counter attack by playing the ball to the flanks in the hope that the wide players or the False nines in the left or right capitalize upon it. Once the ball is with the attackers there is no shortage of bodies up front and any one of them can put the ball into the back of the net.

Media Prediction : 20

The CA145 side could only manage a 14th placed finish in spite of leading the score charts with an eye-watering 256 goals. But, sadly they are in a lowly 40th position in the goals conceded area. The purists might hate this but this is the tactic for you if your aim is to outscore the opponent each and every time. Its a lot of fun as well to smash in the goals.

Results for Lower-table side

Media Prediction : 44

image1

Another over-achievement for a side predicted to end at the bottom. This time they CA120 side manage a respectable 32nd placed finish out of 46. They owe major thanks to the 170 goals they scored, which is the 12th best in the league. They were crushed by heavily superior opponents but whenever they found a weakness in mid-table opponents, they went for blood. They are at their media prediction of 44 in terms goals conceded though, after they let in 240 goals in 90 matches. But I would not care much as long as they shut up their critics with some positive results.

Strength

The strength is there for all to see. This tactic creates a lot of goals and it is obvious that good false nines and Inside forwards are required to finish off those free-flowing chances. A good number of goals have come through through balls and normal passes due to the quantity of players in the front. Any defense will succumb to such pressure.

Weakness

Well, you get no prizes for guessing that the defensive side of things need a serious review. The high defensive line, lack of full backs and the Gegenpressing open a lot of areas behind the defense and you will concede a lot of goals.

3) 3-4-3 Wayward Queen Attack

image1

The Wayward Queen is the first tactic created by Mr L in this year's edition of FM. It is a formation that has three defenders supported by two defensive midfielders at the back and three forwards who can destroy defenses once they get familiar with each other. The two wide midfielders provide adequate support in attack and they track back when the team loses the ball. Another attack-minded tactic which will surely provide a goal-fest.

Another 13th place finish for the CA145 side, which makes this another good tactic for a mid-table side. There was no shortage of goals as the team scored a whopping 187 goals which was much more than what many top teams managed in this league. It was the 5th highest in the league. 128 goals conceded meant that the defense was the 22nd best in the league. This indicates that the defensive side of the tactic is not too shabby.

Results for Lower-table side

Media Prediction : 44

On the other hand, our lower league side could manage only 5 places above prediction. They finished 39th in the league and managed to muster 118 goals which was a decent tally. They conceded 175 goals which was only the 37th best in the league. Probably not the best tactic for your lower league side but it is worth a shot if you can tighten up the defense.

Strength

The strength has been attack again. The understanding between the front-three provides a great spectacle for people who prefer to watch the game. They sent a lot of through balls which were converted by their partners. The second best goal scoring chances came from the wide midfielders who provided a lot of crosses for the front-three to tuck in. It is preferred to have a left-footed winger at the left and a right-footed winger at the right for more crosses.

Weakness

The high defensive line and the lack of full-backs were the culprits again. This allowed a lot of early crosses and through balls past our defenses. If the opposition has pacy forwards, they can catch us time and again with their runs. Anyway, we answer conceding goals with scoring more goals as far as this tactic is concerned.

4) 4-1-3-2 Accelerated Dragon

image1

We move on to a more traditional formation in the form of 4-1-3-2 accelerated dragon. This tactic employs a lot of players through the middle. Hence, the opposition will find themselves out-numbered when they defend. It would be unwise to think that the attacks do not come through the flanks. When the opposition is busy trying to cover gaps in the middle, the attacking wing backs maraud forward as lots of space is left open on the wings. Their crosses can be slotted home by any one of the forwards, attacking midfielder or the attacking central-midfielders.

Results for Mid-table side

Media Prediction : 20

image1

A high 11th placed finish for our mid-table side shows that the tactic can work wonders if you manage to put together a decent squad. The team scored 194 goals and are well above giants like Juventus, United and Bayern in that respect. They managed to concede 115 goals which seems a high number but they are the 17th best in the league in that respect. The formation in itself provides a stable defense. If you can strengthen it, then you might have a good chance of qualifying for the champions league with a mid-table side.

Results for Lower-table side

Media Prediction : 44

image1

The CA120 side's 156 goals(14th best in the league) scored in 90 matches helped them to finish in a respectable 29th position in spite of being a massive underdog. They have conceded 169 goals but a goal difference of -13 and strong mid-table finish are not at all shabby for a side of their stature. A good tactic all around in my opinion.

Strength

The attack has a lot of teeth in this tactic as well. The shape of the tactic is brilliant as our wing-backs often find themselves with a lot of space. Both teams have scored a lot on crosses due to that. If the opposition full-backs dedicate themselves to mark our wing-backs, the central-midfielders wreak havoc as they are on Attack duty.Hence, a massive amount of goals came as a result of through-balls as well.

Weakness

The shape makes sure that there is no glaring weakness in the tactic. CA145 did not concede a lot of goals as they scored. But CA120 did concede a lot because of through-balls. The reason is obvious. You need pacy defenders due to the high defensive line. Buy them and see this problem mitigated.

5) 4-4-2 Deep Sicilian Defense FM17 Overhaul

image1

The Deep Sicilian tactic from FM 16 was doing a decent job but there were areas of improvement. Mr L is a never satisfied with good. He will go for the best always. Hence, he decided to make some changes to the FM16 version of the tactic. The result? A massively over-achieving mid-table side. Let us take a look at the results.

Results for Mid-table side

Media Prediction : 20

image1

A huge success for the CA145 side as they finish at an extra-ordinary 7th place, above the likes of Barcelona and PSG. Their 173 goals scored is only the 12th best in the league but a solid defensive display helped them throughout the test. A measly 90 goals conceded is the 6th best in the league. This tactic is a must try for those who do not like their side concede a lot of goals.

Results for Lower-table side

Media Prediction : 44

image1

It is fair to say that our lower league side finished well above expectations again. 30th position in a tough league ensured they finished 14 positions above media prediction. They scored 106 goals which averages just more than 1 per game but they conceded 122 goals which was the 24th best in the league of 46. A brilliant achievement for a side that people usually tout for relegation.

Strength

The strength of the side lies with the wide men. The past two editions of FM have favored crosses and the 4-4-2 is slowly regaining prominence due to this fact. Even in real life, Leicester won using a 4-4-2. Hence, it makes sense to invest in your wide men. As we can see the statistics, crosses contributed highly towards goal scoring for both sides.

Weakness

Not much, to be honest. But, as always, lack of pacy defenders will hurt you at times. Buy or train good defenders and there is no reason why your team can't cause some serious damage in any league.

6) 4-1-2-3 Calabrese-Counter Gambit

image1

A counter-attacking tactic with a stable formation, the Calabrese-counter Gambit pays rich dividends if you buy good forwards. The defensive midfielder shields the defense allowing the central midfielders to support attacks. Also, when the three False Nine players start developing a good chemistry, they will start working magic. A lot of goals and assists will be shared between them and you may get yourselves, the next MSN or BBC.

Results for Mid-table side

Media Prediction : 20

image1

The CA145 side scored 184 goals, conceded just 90 and finished in a massive 7th place ahead of the Premier league giants Chelsea, United and Arsenal. What more do you want? Eighth in terms of goals scored and seventh in terms in goals conceded goes on to show this is one of the most balanced tactics in this forum. This balance still has a lot of admirers. This tactic is for them and others looking for one stable tactic to use.

Results for Lower-table side

Media Prediction : 44

image1

The CA120 side also performed the best with this tactic. They finished 19 places above media prediction, as they ended up at an handsome 25th position in the league in terms of points. They had a goal difference of just -9 which is really good for minnows playing in a tough league.

Strength

As already mentioned, good False Nines provide a great boost to this tactic. The central midfielders also do their part by supporting the front three. The false Nines send each other on their way past the opposition defense with a lot of through balls. The CA145 side have scored a whopping 42 goals in their last 50 games with through ball assists.

Weakness

The flanks are definitely weak as we have inverted full backs. So a lot of goals conceded are from crosses. Hence, it needs some revisiting. But that is the only problem really. Moreover, we will score a lot of goals to make up for it.
